Government expected to provide better protection from flood
26 June, 2008
After the condition that was seen in the rainfalls last summer, the expectations from Whitehall have increased for the protection of the people from floods if it rains severely this year too, according to a new study.
An independent review which was led by Sir Michael Pitt was made into the tasks that have been done to prevent flooding this year. Among the other recommendations that were made to the government, a very important one was that there must be established a cabinet committee which helps in the reduction of the risk to which the common people are exposed. Like the anti-terrorist and the pandemic prevention operations, flood prevention also must be given the top-priority for the group.
Thousands of people last year had to leave their homes and were shifted to temporary accommodations owing to the losses that were incurred by the floods. Some of these people have not been shifted back from theses shelters even when a year has passed. To prevent such a situation from being repeated this year too, the government has now been urged by Sir Michael that they need to act fast. Developing a National Resilience Forum which can thereby help in making defense strategies needs to be formed. This Forum should help in situations like emergencies and flood conditions.
Money Supermarket appreciated the review and its publication. It also said that a very necessary step has been taken and this will help the people in seeking home insurance policies which have become increasingly difficult for them in recent times. If the people do not have a complete home cover, then the damages that are incurred by the flood waters on the homes will have to be dealt with by the savings or by taking up personal loans by the home owner.
A spokesman from Money Supermarket said, “according to the Association of British Insurers, out of all the areas that were affected by the floods in summer of 2007, only one fourth of the homes and their contents were insured. Even after that, around 165,000 claims were made had been asked for due to the floods. This whopping sum is equivalent to claims of around 4 previous years. From the current situation onwards, the insurers will now be hesitant in insuring the homes that are susceptible to the floods. Also, there is a suggestion for those who are looking for a house. If seeking a residence on a flood plain, one should think carefully as the location of the house may affect the amount of premiums that have to be paid and even if any insurance is available or not.”
“The people who are planning to buy property have a full right to obtain all the information possible before buying. This helps them in having the right idea as to how they should go about it. They should be able to make informed decisions about their insurance and premiums. Borrowing a secured loan is a very good way for people to raise money to buy a house. The deposits can be easily made this way and the opportunity should not be let go of”, added Sir Michael.
Lastly, Sir Michael showed an insistence on the collaboration of the local and the national authority in finding out ways to deal with a crisis such as a flood. The national level authority is really important to keep a check on the ongoing of the work and efficiency of the results.
Abbey Home Insurance had also specified early this year that due to the tumultuous weather, the people’s finances too suffered a lot. Any damages that were caused to the house and the property have to be attended to, which averagely costs around 2699 pounds. A home loan may prove to be really helpful in dealing with such financial constraints.
